![]() If my other posts give the impression I only like female writers, then I’ve misled you. For example, the book I would take on a desert island is The Go-Between by L.P. Hartley. I love good writing in all its forms. I don’t care about the writer’s gender, nationality or age, or even the genre, just so long as it’s good writing. Like most readers, I have my favourites and return to them again and again. But I also like to get out of my comfort zone and take a chance. To minimise the awful prospect of getting a book I don’t enjoy, I let the critics identify outstanding books each year, and pick one from each genre. It’s astonishing how a wonderful writer can open your eyes to a genre you don’t usually like – which, for me, is science fiction. But who cares what I like. It’s what you like that counts.
